But he found a way.
"I knew this team was talented but I urged them to stay humble and hungry throughout the season," said Muggeo, after the Crusaders hoisted their second consecutive championship trophy last moth.The team beat St. Joseph's, 53-41, capping off a perfect 22-0 season and giving Muggeo 72 wins in his four years at Bergen Catholic.
"They knew it was not good enough to win games if we did not win the championship, and that really manifested itself in the end result," he said.
The Crusaders won by an average margin of 32 points while scoring 72 of their own per game.
Muggeo credits the caliber of his players and the coaching philosophy.
"We have a system in place that flows down from (varsity) Coach Bill Armstrong to JV and freshman that sets us up to be great," Muggeo said. "We have a solid offensive and defensive philosophy and some very talented young men."
While Muggeo wouldn't promise a three-peat, he said that the Bergen Catholic system makes anything possible.
"This year will be very hard to top," he said, "but I am confident that if we continue to develop players that way we do, we will be very successful."
